Hello
I get "You do not have permission to view or edit the current permission
settings for (folder name), but you can change auditing settings." I how to
regain access to this folder? This happened because I mistakenly removed
every account except "CREATOR OWNER" and my account at work "Дмитрий
Копничев (Kopnichev@clearing.ru)" from my portable HDD Security Properties
and changed the owner to "Дмитрий Копничев (Kopnichev@clearing.ru)".
Please, Help!

You the XP help system for instruction of Take Ownership.
This is on the Owner tab in the Security dialog. When it asks if
you would like it to set new permissions also, say yes.
You must be an admin while doing this on a system in the install
default state.
Creator Owner is a place holder that has impact on things not
yet created, and will make the creating account have the permissions
stated for Creator Owner.

Thanks for your reply.
How to make my portable drive accessible to my account only at my work and
home Windows XP SP2 computers? My work Windows XP SP2 computer is in a

Dmitry
Your options come down to
1. using NTFS permissions
First, set Administrators Full control
Then, on system 1 set account of system 1 Full control
When next on system 2 set account of system 2 Full control
Do not remove the SID shown from grant on other system
When ready, remove the Administrators Full grant leaving
only grants to the two accounts
2. use EFS encryption - you would need to export the cert
from the domain system, with key, and import it as the
EFS cert/key in the other system. This works if the machines
are same OS, but requires reg adjustments if say one is W2k
and other is XP Pro. This is not an option if one machine is
XP Home
3. use third-party whole disk or file selective encryption product.

Thanks Roger Abell,
Should I leave grants to the CREATOR OWNER also, so I would be able to save
to the disk on other computers? Will not others be able to see my folders
and files created on my two Windows XP Pro, if I leave grants to the CREATOR
OWNER also?

Thanks Roger Abell,
How can I retain ability to save to my disk's root on other computers?
Leaving grants to the CREATOR OWNER does not allow me saving to my disk's
root on other computers.
