I downloaded virus protection software "AntiVir" because my NAV (Norton) did
not catch some Trojans and Backdoors (I have current definitions). The
"AntiVir" detects all any idea why?

Antivirus programs detect Viruses. Trojans and Backdoors are not Viruses.
Many "offbrand" antivirus programs return false positives.

You were better off with the Norton AV. It was doing it's job (assuming you
were keeping it updated).

In order to deal with malware, adware, etc you need to use other tools.

Suggest you use Google and learn the difference between viruses, worms,
trojans etc.

Please note that I did not use the word "virii" at any time in the body of
text above.
I am proud to speak English and would not butcher it by using words that do

Symantec freely admits that the Personal and Small Business editions of NAV
don't support identifying and removing much of the hijackware (Trojan-like
hijackers) that plagues many users.

What do you mean by "Please note that I did not use the word "virii" at any

I am proud to speak English and would not butcher it by using words that do

Finally, if you want to get the best all in one Anti-virus + Trojan + Worm +
Malware remover, please do yourself a favour and get NOD32 Anti-Virus, it
beats the sh.t out any AV out there at moment. NAV is utter cr.p and the
others are not much good either.

NOD32 has consistently been one of the best if not absolutely the best
performer in the Virus Bulletin Labs. Please see for yourself at
http://www.virusbtn.com/
BTW Virus Bulletin is completly independent of any AV tool developer or
marketer.

I have consistently used NOD32 for over 2 years and have not had to install
any other solution till date. In my experience I have not seen it miss
anything yet! Be it a Trojan, a Worm, a Virus or even various
Spyware/Malware. Besides being an excellent tool, it consumes less resources
by spwaning fewer threads unlike the bloatware that NAV/SAV or the rest of
the ilk are!!!

ZDNet Germany just did a comprehensive roundup of 31 different AV apps.
NOD32 was one of 4 that failed and earned their recommendation as a "Don't
Use". I have never used it myself, but have read that it does miss some
things that Norton and McAfee do not miss.

ZDNet can say what they like, however according to Virus Bulletin, it (NOD32)
is one of the best. Besides, my advise flows from the fact I have first hand
experience using and deploying Symantec AV for over 5+ years within various
large to very large enterprises and can testify to the problems inherent in
that solution. Unlike ZDNet and Gartners of the day, I am not a marketing guy
but a seasoned technical professional who has learned the hard way on how to
separate the marketing hype from the grounded realities in evaluating and
deploying solutions. To that end, I choose to stick with NOD32.

And let's face it, it is not a matter of opinion only, there's no harm in
giving NOD32 a fair go and see for yourself whether it stacks up or not.

Pretty sure that is not the link Pete was looking for - more likely the
ZDNet Germany link..
(Which I do not know)

Here is an interesting one though. "Fitz" gave this to me a while back.
http://www.av-comparatives.org/

Let me warn you - that web page does not look nice in Firefox...
Had to revert to Internet Explorer to get some of the tabling to look right.
Look through the Comparatives tables.

In the retrospective tests, there is no comparing to NOD32. heh So if you
are lazy and don't understand the whole auto-update thing - NOD32 is
definitely for you! (It scores high everywhere else as well - and it is
great it scores so well n matter how badly someone treats it (like not
updating for 3 months!)
