Spyware apps for Win95

I need to set up a PC for a temporary user (student intern), and the only
spare I have that's any good is an old Win 95 unit. I'd like to install
anti-spyware on it, but SpyBot S&D won't install because it keeps telling me
there are .dlls missing. I tried to download and install them, but still no
luck. I tried AdAware, but the newer versions don't work on 95 either. I
understand one of the older versions does, but I can't find it. Does anyone
know where I can download an older version of AdAware that is compatible with
Win 95? We are a non-profit, and money is tight. Thanks!

Installing an older version of AdAware will not help, as they no longer
support it, and you won't be able to have any of the definitions.

OK, Tom...thanks! Maybe I'll just see if I can find an on-line scan that
works.

You really won't be able to do much with a Win95 box as far as
installing any antispyware tools. If it looks like the machine is
picking up anything bad, you'll have to hand-manage it which is tricky
unless you know exactly what should be on a Win95 system.

However, you can try F-Prot for DOS for antivirus scanning. It will
still run on Win95 - it will still run on 3.1 for that matter!

http://www.f-prot.com/products/home_use/dos/

Basically, you might consider just not letting that box onto the
Internet, or be *really* strict about where the intern goes.

Good luck,

Malke

Hi,
You should be able to take some steps to prevent malware from installing.

1. The HOSTS file from http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm should work
with Win95.
2. Many of the Recommended Minimal Security Settings at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm will be relevant to Win95.
3. SpywareBlaster from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
should work on Win95. There's a FAQ article regarding msvbvm60.dll being
missing.
4. IE-Spyad should work https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

Hope this helps,
Don

Thank you Tom, Malke, and Don. I figured I'd get good advice here. I'll try
your suggestions.
