Registry Cleaner and Spyware

I've been using the free version of Spybot Search and Destroy and also
Spyware Blaster on my PC.

I've just discovered PC Tools Registry Mechanic and Spyware Doctor and ran
the free check - only to discover that there appears to be an awful lot of
spyware that SpyBot hasn't found.

Is it worth purchasing the PC Tools software? How important is a Registry
Cleaner and this Spyware Doctor?

I'm more than a bit paranoid about spyware and viruses, etc, but don't know
that much about it.

Thanks for your help.

It is hard to say without knowing what was found, but most people include
Spybot and Ad-Aware and a few other tools on their list of anti-spyware
tools. Those other tools you mention usually do not make most people's
lists.

I would not recommend the tools you mentioned. I suggest as alternatives
the following:

1. Ad-aware Personal (freeware)
2. Spyware Blaster (freeware)
3. CCleaner (freeware)

You may want to consider Spybot Search & Destroy (freeware) but in my
experience Ad-Aware is sufficient.

I assume you already have an efficient Antivirus Program.

The need/usefulness of a Registry Cleaner in Winxp is the subject of much
debate. Strictly speaking Winxp does not require a Registry Cleaner to
remain efficient, however, if you feel more comfortable removing the junk
that does accumulate in the Registry I have found RegSeeker (freeware) both
efficient and safe to use. RegSeeker automatically backs up all entries
that are removed from the Registry.

All the software mentioned can be found by searching Google.
