Product Key - Windows validation fails on Genuine Key

Just tried downloading MDAC 2.81 Release
It talked about validation, said it was optional, so I thought, "What the
hell" and went for it.

I work for a very large company in the UK, all our kit is from Dell, no idea
if directly bought or through dealer (probably direct from Dell). The
product key for Windows 2000 is on the side of the Optiplex.

But the validation failed.
I rechecked the product key, found that I had put '0' instead of 'Q'
But I am 100% certain that we are legal.

This is pretty shitty state of affairs if MS validation does not work.

Stephen could you clarify your problem?

After you found the typo in the product key, did the validation still fail?
If so what error did you get and what exact version of Windows are you
running (including service pack version)

I think I have solved this.
The paper product key on the side of the Dell Optiplex indicates "Windows XP
Professional 1 - 2CPU" at the top and I think that is what it came with.
But at the time, a few years ago our companies policy was not to upgrade to
Windows XP - it was too new. So I think Windows 2000 Professional (and now
with SP4) was installed on top of this (a downgrade).

So I don't know the Product Key.

Yep that would do it :-)

You will have to find out from your IT guys what product key to use.
It's a shame XP is a big improvement over Win2k Pro!

Anyway good luck

Hi

Surely there's a mistake there.

Attached to this message is an application I have just wrote which returns
the Digital Product ID. If you use Outlook Express to view these newsgroups
then you can download it.

Its written to work on the .NET Framwork 1.1 & remember who wrote it & who
should have full credit. Although, I do not take resposibility for the
misuse of the program

Have fun
