Mapped drives lost with hard drive crash

One of our users had a hard drive crash a few months ago. Most of his
information was restored on the new drive via backup files, but our backup
system does not copy the ntuser.dat file. Because of this, the user has lost
all his mappings. He claims to have been mapped to shares on about three or
four different servers, but he has no idea which ones, or even what the share
names were. Is there any way to scan the network/servers and find what file
shares he would've had access to? Most users have access to shares via
Groups, so if there's a way to search for his domain login and have it show
which Groups he is a member of, that would probably answer our question.

The only way you could actually try and track down the shares would be if he
had written files to shares in which case he would be the owner. In such
case you could use a Resource Kit tool such as subinacl [not a user friendly
tool] to find if he is the owner of files on a particular server. You can
find his group membership in his user account in the member of tab though
that will show direct group membership and not membership in nested groups.
If you need that info I know the Active Directory command line tools such as
dsquery may be able to help. Those tools are Windows 2003 tools but you can
use them is you install adminpak for Windows 2003 on a Windows XP Pro domain
computer. If the user knows the name of any of his files stored on a server
you might try searching that way also. The links below may help. --- Steve
