Keylogger Trouble

07-09-2005, 10:50 PM
Hi,
I was playing Yahoo Hearts the other day. Another player told me
he had "keylogged" me by looking at some kind of information when I
sent him a personal message through the Hearts chat message option.
Then he said, "Oh, you've got Zone Alarm."

He was trying to get into my computer. And yes, I have zone
alarm.

How the hell could he do that? What information from the Yahoo
Hearts personal message dialog reveals my computer and let's him try
to get in?

I presume Zone Alarm protected me. I went ot Zone Alarm to look
for blocked attemps, and found nothing.

I'm worried now about internet stalkers. I want to understand
what he did to ID me, and how to prevent anybody from doing that
again.

Preying on the paronoia.
If he tried to get in, he would have left a footprint in your logs.

But HOW did he know I had zone alarm?
HOW did he find my computer?
HOW can I prevent my information from being discoverd when I play
Hearts?

You have Windows XP don't you..?
You use Internet Explorer, huh?
You use AVG Anti-Virus and Spybot S&D and update almost daily, eh?
At least you got the HP logo cleaned off your Internet Explorer...
How are things on the Willamette campus?
Attempted to use Partition Magic lately?

Many people use zone alarm. I believe this person was just yanking your
chain.

The whole "I have a keylogger" makes no sense. If he really had a keylogger
on your computer and knew you had zone alarm, then he already owned your
computer and wasn't "about to hack into it."

If you want some assurance, then make sure your anti-virus software is up to
date and run a full system scan. Run a second opinion AV scan also by going
to http://housecall.antivirus.com You might also run the root kit detection
tool at www.sysinternals.com If nothing is found, then I doubt this person
was telling the truth.

Relax. Its just another lamer--probably some 11yr old kid. I keep track of
bugs/flaws and lately I have not seen ZoneAlarm in the list (so even if he
had your IP it wouldn't help any in the case of that kid unless of course ZA
is utter crap and your box is unpatched in which case he would resort to
using exploits written by someone else) -- that was just a lucky guess. Then
again a keylogger really doesn't do much. Other than that if you own
somebody's box you don't tell them. You backdoor it and apply a rootkit.

Kind of like when you go to a fortune teller...

They appear to give very accurate readings about your current situation,
but a lot of the time all they do is to make educated and informed
guesses about it based on stuff like your age/appearence/etc
