Ad Aware SE & MS Antispyware Beta

i let someone talk me into installing MSs antispyware program. they said it
would find hundreds of spyware that all other spyware programs miss.
well...it didn't find a whole helluva lot - apparently Ad Aware was doing
quite well.

since installing MSs antispyware program, Ad Aware won't work now. i
uninstalled the MS program, uninstalled the Ad Aware program... rebooted too
even tho nothing advised me to. reinstalled Ad Aware and still it won't
work. there was NOTHING wrong with Ad Aware BEFORE installing gates'
flailing attempt at competing with all the other programs available.

i'm no computer geek so i'm not really sure what to do about this. i'm
thinking billy boy has set up something in the registry...but i have no idea
what to look for. has anyone else experience the deactivation of ad aware (or
perhaps other brands of antispyware) after installing the MS antispyware
prog?? i am NOT happy camper. dunno what to use now as i found Ad Aware
to be the best in my opinion.

thanks for any help

Well, it does say "BETA" in the very name..
(BETA means "in testing"..)

There is a newsgroup explicitly for the BETA MS AntiSpywware.. You may try
your question there..

The MS AntiSpyware program and Ad-Aware happily co-exist, at least they do
for me (WINXP Pro). The problem is something other than incompatibility of
the programs.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Just an FYI. I've been using both on several computers since shortly after
MS released the Beta.

Doesn't help I know other than to reinforce the notion that the two can work
together.

A common question in the Newsgroups (why does AdAware find cookies that MS
Antispyware doesn't?) lends credence to the fact that lots of folks are
using the two together. (the answer btw is that MS Antispyware doesn't
search for cookies)

Someone else provided the MS Antispyware NG so I won't repeat.

Lastly if you use beta software you should anticipate problems. Quoted from
the download page "This is pre-release (beta) software distributed for
feedback and testing purposes." (can't say nobody warned ya ;-)

Good luck

Get rid of both Adware Away & MS AntiSpyware. The only one you should use is
SpyBot S & D. You can download it here:

ftp://ftp.freenet.de/pub/filepilot/windows/security/spybot/spybotsd13.exe

Latest SpyBoy Def's:

I do wish you were correct and Spybot did everything.
It doesn't.

I have Adware, MS Antispyware and Spybot installed (me paranoid?) for
several years. My normal practice is to run Adaware first. When I do this
neither Spybot or MS Antispware pick up anything and appear to be
superfulous to requirements as clearly Adaware does all that is necessary,
at least in my experience. On the occasions I have run Spybot or MS
Antispyware first more often than not they will not identify anything but
sometimes Adware will throw up something the other two miss, never the
reverse. If there needs to be a choice, my experience says that Adaware is
far and away the best of the Antispyware programs.

To avoid unnecessary debate I will concede there may be malware floating
around that Adaware may miss and MS Antispyware or Spybot will find but that
hasn't been my experience.

Buffalo bagels.

There is no "one shot wonder" (yet?) in this arena.

HillbillyBuddhist: i will concede there is no "one shot wonder"
available yet. don't think there ever will be.

Edward W. Thompson: i've experience the same thing. Ad Aware SE is
greatly improved over earlier versions and it *DOES* catch many things other
spyware programs don't. i plan on doing whatever i can to get Ad Aware SE
working again on my 'puter... and the hell with all the others.

Shenan Stanley: thanks, and i know the MS program is a beta and therefore
in a "testing" stage. while i expect to experience glitches and bugs with a
beta program, i don't expect it to affect other programs. MS has a history
of comandeering things and has made a habit of producing programs that forces
one to have installed certain other MS programs (like IE for example) before
a particular program can be used. however, since two readers have indicated
they use both the MS program AND AdAware, i can only assume that the
difference could be in when we downloaded our respective copies of the MS
program. there could have been changes to the program by the time i
downloaded it. possibility. no?? thanks for the link to the newsgroup for
the MS beta spyware program. i will check it out.

Crouchie1998: thanks, but no thanks. i've tried SpyBot S&D before..
didn't like it.

Tom Pepper Willett: ROFL in reference to your reply to Couchie1998.
gotta agree with ya!!

thanks to everyone for replying!!

m8 wat u need to do is luk for all regisrty traces of ms antispyware and
delete them, do this by: RUN>then type "msconfig" , this will bring up your
registry, then delete ms antispyware from startup, from services etc.

Repeat this step with AD-Aware then restart computer

Install AD-Aware again, and shud be fine

"msconfig" does not bring up the registry. But "regedit" does.
