Because I spent a great deal of time finding a way to get rid of the
StartPage.m virus/trogan on my Windows XP system I thought it might be
worthwhile posting the solution here in case anyone else comes by as I
did earlier.
It turns out that the free Microsoft AntiSpy Beta program
(http://www.microsoft.com/athome/sec...re/default.mspx) will find and
remove it if you set the options to "Deepscan Folders." I had tried two
different virus programs and three Spy Ware programs before trying it
(and it was already on my computer, but I hadn't set the deepscan
option before).
I had my system restore option turned off when I used it but I'm not
sure that was necessary. Also, I ran my virus scan immediately
afterward, then rebooted. It's a day later and I've had no further
problems.
