On my Windows 2000 Pro SP-4 computer, I "upgraded" to Microsoft Update. It
worked once (downloaded and installed a couple of updates). I rebooted and
logged back in as Administrator. Now, when I go to Microsoft Update, it
complains about "Error number: 0x800700C1", and displays its default
"self-help options" page.

Also... Now that I've installed the Microsoft Update "upgrade",
windowsupdate.microsoft.com no longer works. It just displays a blank page.

Any suggestions?

had exactly the same problem, and there was an earlier posting in this NG
which was the solution:
download from MS and install MS XML parser MSXML 3.0 SP5

Thanks. Downloading and installing MSXML 3.0 SP5 sounds like it would have
solved my problem... except that I was in a hurry, and after an hour on the
phone with Microsoft tech support getting nowhere, I gave up and restored my
PC to backup I took a couple of months ago.

The reason that I believe the MSXML thing would have been key to resolving
my issue is that, after I posted my query to this NG, I discovered that
Visual Studio wouldn't start. But it told me that it couldn't load
MSXML3.DLL. Oh well... Maybe Microsoft will fix the stupid thing so that it
includes all the required bits and pieces (like MSXML 3.0 SP5)...

Yes. Installing MSXML 3.0 SP5 fixed the issue. No need for me to even
restart the machine. Look for this download here:

BTW I had a Windows 2000 Server.

I think Microsoft should add this error number and fix to the Getting help
and support section within Microsoft Update.

Had identical situation and installed the MS XML Parser MSXML 3.0 update to
resolve thise situation.
