Good morning, happy 4th.

I am mostly recovered from a horrible crash that involved a video board that
self-destructed and probably, coincidentally, a virus. I've reinstalled a lot
of software including Office, my e-mail program, Eudora, and I've reinstalled
my two printers.

One functionality I occasionally need is the ability to send and receive
faxes. I have installed this successfully for some years but now, when I try
to install it, the control panel tells me to insert a CD containing SP2.

I see on the MS site a way to send off to MS for such a disk, but I would
think that would cost me a handling and shipping fee. I would think there
would be a way that I could download it and save it to a disk. I have already
downloaded SP2 and installed it and I don't understand why the control panel
wants to see a disk with SP2 on it.

Hope there's a knowledgable person out there who's not yet totally immersed
in fourth fireworks and fun.

Their is no fee for the disk not even shipping and handling.

It is probality looking for something that is not normally installed.
an example would be ntbackup for XP Home or a few dozen tools I just learned
are on the XP CD that dont get installed unles you search for them.

I am still puzzled by the difficulty or maybe the impossibility of
downloading and burning to disk the sp2. It seems counter-intuitive for
Microsoft to make this so hard or undoable. It also seems like a poor
business practice: surely the bandwidth is cheaper than the stamps and
handling involved in shipping physical product?

Critical person that this old reporter can't avoid being, I must observe
that this bulletin board should afford an opportunity to rate answers with a
degree of helpfulness rather than as either useful or not. As may be
apparent, this exchange is my first encounter with a Microsoft "community."

You can download SP2 from Microsoft's web site.

But I doubt that the SP2 CD alone will help you, I would think that
when the app tells you to insert a CD containing SP2, it means an
OS CD where SP2 is slipstreamed (integrated).


To create a slipstreamed SP2 CD:

You can download the SP2 file (266 MBs) from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en


or if you have a copy of the SP2 CD, you can use the xpsp2.exe
file from that CD.

Then follow e.g. the directions in the following article to
create a slipstreamed XP CD:

If you hadn't identified yourself as being in Norway, I'd have guessed that
your last name was Finnish. Torgeir, though, sounds like a good Scandinavian
name having to do with the God Thor. I had a Norwegian pal once named
Torsten, which he said meant Thor's stone. I see from son Googling that your

Don't you think the app should have SAID that?

I will work my way through what you have sent, and maybe, at the end of the
process, if I don't keep wandering off looking up names, I'll A) understand
what slipstream means other than the path air takes around a moving thing and
B) I'll get my fax capacity back.

Yes, Tor is the thunder god (norse), from that we get the Norwegian
word torden (English thunder), Geir means spear (norse), and Bakken
is "the hill".

When it asks for the disk, point it to C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\
If it fails to find it there, point it to C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386

You might try your local Staples Office Supply, that is where I picked up my
copy of sp2 for xp. Also Comp USA has copies.
