PC stop working after few minutes

07-09-2005, 09:18 PM
Hi Guys,
I need your help. My EpoX motherboard sent me a new replacement MoBo. I've assembled
and returned everything and including my old BIOS setting. PC bootup win-xp ok BUT it
will not run continuously because hard drive LED stop. All program just stop
functioning after few minute of running. Cold boot has no effect except to Reset and
always did checking files on all drives. I deleted one Trojan Horse virus on popup
warning BUT couldn't completely scan the whole hard drive because AV program stop also.
I also tried in Safe Mode to clean-up AV, Spyware & Malware BUT not successful because
it stop also. Oh Boy - I give up!

Any tip, help or suggestion will be gladly appreciated.

Is this motherboard identical to the original one? If not (and it
may not be even if it seems to be), you may need to do a repair
installation of Windows.

YES! Ken,
My motherboard is identical to the original one. Every hardware and software are
identical and the same. Hope and Thanks it will not STOP on Repair Install.

Check to be absolutely sure that your cpu fan is spinning and that
the heat sink has a good contact with the cpu, with a new layer of
the special heat conducting "grease" between cpu and heat sink

An overheating cpu will run for 20 seconds to a minute or so and
then issue a command to the motherboard to STOP

Hi John,
Maybe you're right because I _DID NOT_ apply a new layer of the special heat
conducting "grease" between cpu and heat sink. I used the old grease as I did NOT minus
or wasted the amount of grease and I did mounted in original location of heat sink and
fan. I used pen-tel marking dots to locate them.

I need a 2nd opinion if I really need to change the grease. My CPU fan is running OK.
My PC have 3 fans and no heating is observed.

I programmed in BIOS to shut down PC when reaching at very high temperature. I cannot
tell the actual temperature right now because it is shut down and idled. Thanks!

Hi Paul,
CPU Warning Temperature is set at 63C/145F
and I actually did ACPI Shutdown Temp for Disable; or choose from 60C/140F to high of
95C/203F. Thanks!

If they are truly identical, a repair installation shouldn't be
necessary, and won't help. On the other hand it won't hurt
either, and it might be worth trying.

Whenever you remove and reinstall the CPU you should clean off the old
heatsink grease and apply a thin coating of new grease.

Make sure your heatsink is mounted correctly. I know it seems like a simple
procedure to put on a heatsink but you would be surprised how easy it is to
get it on wrong! You can damage the CPU by running at excessive
temperatures.

Hi Richard,
I can tell mine is NOT a THIN COATING BUT it worked for many years that way. Maybe I
should take out some and make it a thin coating this time before I do a Repair xp
Installation or wait for another day and see what my MoBo company says on this. If thin
grease coating will solve my problem of frequently stopping hard drive activity - maybe
I should also stop further repairing it and begin to enjoy my good working PC.

I'm pretty sure I mounted it correctly as it is rectangular in shape and I marked it
position to returns it correctly. It not liked those rounded or square CPU heat sink
where mistake always happen. With my rectangular type - I can easily aligned it
correctly by its rectangular mounting channel guide and if correctly sited it will
allow 2 mounting clips snap into place. Even a kid can do it because of good designed.

Thanks for the many helps you've given me whenever I visited this newsgroup!

Regards! ---Rino

Yes, I'll do it BUT NOT immediately as other easy remedy can fix it. Repartition? - NO
and Never need it! Reformat - maybe and if Repair Installation failed and that will be
my last resort I'll do if everything suggested here failed. Thanks!

Only a thin coating is needed, about 1/2 the size of a grain of rice. Then
toy spread it out ever so thinly with an old business card. Whatever remains
on the card, throw away. Too much and you can cause overheating.

Note: In a perfect world the top of the CPU and the bottom of the heatsink
would be mirror smooth and no heatsink would be needed. But the world is not
perfect. The grease fills in the microscopic pits that are on the surfaces
and afford greater surface to surface contact area - hence greater heat
dissipation.

WoW! I think you're absolutely right and my BIG mistake to put as much as possible and
to fill up that shinny square area. They just told us to apply the content of grease
enclosed and never tell us the way you told me now. I think you're more qualify on this
topic.

The very first hour tomorrow I'll concentrate to make it right this time by following
all your valid suggestions. I must send my million thanks to you for saving my CPU - I
would never knew I'm assembling the wrong way because of applying too much thermal
grease.

Regards,
<Rino>

1. It was then, now is now.
2. If I could do it, I would do it.
4. If you told me how to do it then for sure I can do it.

Uh-oh, I put on barely grease strain (my thinest coating possible) on CPU and on heat
sink BUT it didn't fix my PC problem of hard drive shut down after reboot. Waiting from
EpoX tech support reply before doing Repair Installation. Thanks for your support and
expectation. Regards! -- Rino

PC stop working after few minutes
