I try to update W2k. After clicking the link "scan for updates" I get the
error message:

"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view etc."

Below is a part from windowsupdate.log file. Can some expert tell me what to
do? Many thanks.

What happens if you try to use that URL from the Address bar?

Compare with what you see if you try the same URL with the http:
protocol prefix instead of https. Note: in order to see the proper
error message in IE you must have *unchecked*
Show friendly HTTP error messages
(in Options, Advanced tab, Browsing section)

Hmm... I get an error message with this code 0x8DDD0010
It's not very clear but there is a link at the bottom of the page
Oh great. That gets the framework for an error message only
(no text). Press Ctrl-N so we can see the URL in a new window.
Aha. There's a problem in the URL: ln=undefined
Change that to ln=en and hit Enter.
Ha. Troubleshooter still under construction? (Page refers to
V5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com for resolving pop-up blocker
caused problem. I suspect a different URL should have been
suggested for use with the V6 site. Etc. )

The same troubleshooter allowed me to enter 80090305 (your code)
but it had no information about it. It does have information about https
(again with those non-obvious "links" at the bottom of the page)
but even if I switch the protocol prefix to http: I still have to go through
the above rigmarole to fix the ln=undefined error. YMMV.
