Windows Update KB898461 trashed my Start Menu

After automatically installing Windows Update KB898461 on 6/29/05 and
restarting XP I got a message like "The Registry was corrupted during install
process...Restoring previous successful registry....process successful. (Not
in those exact words)
Then I opened the Start Menu. It looks the same, but when I hover over or
click All Programs or any other submenu they don't appear. I had Control
Panel set up as a submenu but when I clicked it it appeared in category view.
I also can't view all my Quick Launch folders as submenus...they appear in
Explorer mode as well.
I right-clicked Start/Explore All Users and the subfolders and shortcuts I
had before are all still on the hard drive, they just don't show up.
I went to Windows Update site and viewed my update history, then clicked on
this update and it said I could uninstall it through Add/Remove Programs, but
it's not listed there. How can I get my Startmenu back?

I have sort of the same problem, but not as severe.

I received the same error message a few days ago, and certain icons no
longer seem to exist...while the start menu and indeed most folders still
work fine, I find that, for example, in Network Connections, there are no
icons. And yet, my wireless still works, and I assume my 1394 adapter bridge
as well as my cable output still works, though I have yet to try the latter
two.

The strange part is, I have it so that Windows Updates are downloaded to my
computer but I choose whether or not to install them, and I certainly did not
install any of them before the notification.

I think my help and support program is also messed up- I get no topics or
anything.

Also, when I check the WinUpdate website and it examines all my updates, the
only one that ever failed was KB898461, and so of course, in my ever-smart
thinking, I tried downloading it again before coming here. (un?)fortunately
enough, it ended up failing again.
