Max,

See if this resolves the issue :
Go to Internet Options in the Control Panel. Click the Advanced tab.
Scroll down to the Security heading. UNcheck the box next to " Check for
server certificate revocation [requires restart] ".
Also, put a check in the box next to " Do not save encrypted pages to
disk ". Click Apply, OK, restart the system and revisit Windows Update
to see if the issue is resolved.

Tried MowGreen's suggestion worked on one computer with XP Professional SP 2
and able to download windows update ver 6 but did not work on my other
computer with same OS. So went to windows update ver 4 site and in left side
clicked on administrator options and under update multiple operating systems
selected windows update catalog on the left side of this page selected see
also windows update which brings up windows update ver 4 with an Active x
control prompt to be downloaded. Select download of this Active x control.
Then at the top of the windows update page select windows update worlwide and
select english this will launch checking for latest version of windows update
ver 6 and complete install. Remember to do this after doing MowGreen's
suggestions. It did not work the first time but this sequence did work the
next time. Good Luck
