Well I've been having the same problem for several days now. I found
something weird, when I go in Tools>Internet
Options>Connections>Settings>Proxy Server, the proxy settings are both
enabled but when I unable them, I can go to Windows Update. After a while,
they both go back to enable without my intervention and I must disable them
again. It looks like something is playing with my proxy settings and it
really bugs me.

Are you using an Internet Accelerator (High Speed Access) from your
ISP, like NetZero HiSpeed, Juno Speedband, or similar? If so, turn it
off and try to update again.
If it worked don't forget to turn your Accelerator back on.
If it didn't, or you don't use an Accelerator, then try this:

!! Be sure to click OK or hit ENTER after each one !!
1-Click Start, click Run and then type this:
net.exe stop wuauserv

2-Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll

3-Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s wups.dll

4-Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll

5-Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll

6-Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll

7-Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll

8-Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s jscript.dll

9-Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s atl.dll

10-Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s softpub.dll

11-Click Start, click Run and then type this:
regsvr32 /s msxml3.dll

12-Click Start, click Run and then type this:
net.exe start wuauserv

Reboot and try the Windows Update site again.

dak,

I do have an Internet Accelerator and I did what you said and it worked.
Now I'll make sure to turn off my accelerator before going to windows update.

I changed the Proxy settings and was able to get windows update. They just
recently upgraded the Microfsoft update website. The windows updater then
started
the upgrade download automatically. Once the upgrade was completed, it then
checked my computer for other updates. It is working fine, now.
