I have just installed Windows XP - SP2 and now my machine runs extremely
slowly and the disk is 'thrashing' all of the time. I have looked in the
task manager but the CPU is 95%+ idle, does anyone know what could be causing
this ?

The disk is only 1 month old and has lots of spare space available (about
120Gb)

Help !

Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, System
Click the "Hardware" tab
Click the "Device Manager" button
Click the + on "Processors"
Now look at your processor info: Is your processor's speed displayed incorrectly ??
Example: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.66 GHz
If yes, then the Processor driver is not the cause of your slowdown.

If the processor's speed is NOTdisplayed correctly, then go create a restore point:
Click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore

Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, System
Click the "Hardware" tab
Click the "Device Manager" button
Click the + on "Processors"
Right-click your processor, select "Properties"
Click the "Driver" tab

If you click the "Driver Details" button, you'll see that the driver is from the SP2 update.
It'll read something like: 5.1.2600.2180 (xp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158) and the driver's File
Name will probably be: 'intelppm.sys'
And again, you'll see the incorrect processor speed listed.

Click the "Roll Back Driver" button and roll it back.
Reboot the computer

NOTE: You won't get a choice when rolling it back, so just go with whatever it selects.
When you roll it back, Windows will probably complain about the driver not being certified, but
just continue anyway and restart when prompted.

After the reboot, the driver will now read something like: 5.1.2600.1142 (xpsp2.021108-1929) and
the driver's File Name will probably be: 'processr.sys'
The processor's speed will also be displayed correctly now.

MAKE SURE YOU CREATE THE RESTORE POINT FIRST! (Just in case you want to go back, or something
goes wrong. You never know with MS...)
