Latest XP Updates hosed my system

I have a Dell Dimension 4400 woth XP SP2 on it. Updates were downloaded
automatically a week or so ago and I installed them without incident.
Unfortunately, ever since I applied the updates, the system takes FOREVER to
start. It locks up right as it starts painting the desktop.

I was also getting an error from Norton Ghost (v9) saying "Unable to
successfully reconcile changes since last session. Unable to enumerate the
current drives on this system". There was a popup and one of the Ghost
background services was eating up 99% of the CPU. Symantec did not have a
good solution so I just uninstalled Ghost for the time being. That cleaned
up the symptom of the problem, but there's still something going on.

Still the system's slow to start up. I tried safe mode and also used
msconfig and another third-party utility to do a selective startup. Nothing
helped.

The symptoms are the desktop paints, but immediately locks up for 2 minutes.
When it frees, the Windoes startup music plays and the programs again become
responsive. There are NO errors in any of the event logs.

Any thoughts ??
