Microsoft Windows Update [Error number: 0x800A1391]

When I attempt to update Windows I get the following error:

[Error number: 0x800A1391]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view.

I had recently downloaded and installed the following windows update files
directly prior to getting the update error message: KB894391, KB893803 and
KB886903. I am using Windows XP Home OS, SP2, Nortons Internet Security
2004, Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta and cable ISP.
I have done the following:
1) Updated my Norton's Internet Security and scanned my entire computer for
any virus
2) Updated my Beta Microsoft Anti-Spyware and scanned my entire computer
for any spyware.
3) Ran my Dell Support Version 5.0.0.766, powered by Gteko
NIS found no virus on my computer. Microsoft Anti-Spyware found no spyware
on my PC (I ran full computer scans with both NIS and Microsoft
Anti-Spyware). And the Dell Support software found no update, maintenance or
security issues with my PC.
And I have:
1) Downloaded and ran CWShredder in Windows Safe Mode
2) Entered succesfully seven different Microsoft url's (including the
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us url that
is displayed when I attempt to update windows) to IE trusted sites in the
Internet Options.
The CWShredder found no COOLWEBSEARCH Trojan on my PC. Entering the url's
in the trusted sites list made no difference to me being able to update
windows. I still receive the same error code.
And lastly I have:
1) I checked the Windows Time and Date, they are both accurate.
2) I checked that there is only one language assigned in the IE options.
There was only English (United States) [en-us].

If anyone who might know how to remedy this situation of not being able to
update Windows using the Microsoft Windows Update Server and receiving the
Error 0x800A1391, PLEASE HELP by posting what needs to be done.

Thank you very much,

I hit the same problem today. One difference: I got a "Generic Host Failure"
when I started the machine (Dell Precision Workstation 450, XP Pro, service
pack 2). After restarting the machine without getting the "Generic Host
Failure", I attempted to use Windows Update and got a 0x800A1391 error
message. I've done the same checks as Airpilot and also scanned the machine
using Norton AntiVirus 2005. None of the checks/tests found any remarkable
conditions.

Would appreciate any help in locating the source of this problem.

I received some assistance from a Microsoft tech who was very helpful.

I hope this will help for your situation as well dsonnen...

It appears that when I downloaded the Microsoft file(s), I had also updated
my Dell Support program. (One of the Microsoft files that I downloaded and
installed was specifically for the Dell Support program.) The Dell support
program made security changes of my Norten Internet Security NIS program
settings. The new NIS (settings) affected Internet Explorers (IE) ability to
download the neccessary ActiveX for the Microsoft Server to check for
updates. I haven't found exactly what the change of settings the new Dell
Support program made. However, I like the additional security, and, have
found a way to keep the setting for additional security as well as do manual
updates from the Microsoft web site.

Suggestions and Solutions

1) Open Internet Explorer. Disable Nortens Internet Security. Click TOOLS
on IE, Windows Update.

The ActiveX could be downloaded for me and the Microsoft website determine
what, if any, updates my PC needed.

Be sure to enable NIS after the update is completed.

2) In addition to the above. Set Auto-Windows Update to notify you whenever
a new update is available. You can either set Windows Auto Updater to
download and install any availalbe up dates automatically or for it to notify
you that they are available and download and install them without the use of
Internet Explorer.

3) If disabling NIS by itself does not allow you to do the update manually
at the Microsoft website, try disabling any anti-spyware programs also.
Disable them only to check for a Windows update then enable any of the
programs that you disabled.

I usually update Windows, NIS, Microsoft Ani-Spyware and Nortens
Anti-Spyware and scan my PC at least once a week. I also do so anytime I
disable any security or anti-virus software for any reason, regardless of
being connected to the internet.

I hope this is helpful dsonnen or anyone else encountering the same error
code from the Microsoft website.

I did the simplest and safest thing - IN NIS, navigate to custom settings in
the personal firewall section of the NIS box and change the active x control
to medium - it promprts you for active x downloads and the update site works
again - without disabling all your other NIS internet protection.

I tried shutting down Zone Alarm and Windows Update worked. I reinstalled
Zone Alarm and deleted the Zone Alarm Internet Logs, so True Vector Monitor
would start with a clean database. The problem went away.

Zone Labs technical support tells me that occasionally the True Vector
database corrupts and deleting or renaming the Internet Logs folder will
generally solve the problem.

I don't know if you're aware that you don't have uninstall/reinstall
ZA to get a fresh/clean database. If you're using DShield or
MyNetWatchman reporting you'll lose the ZA Firewall logs they use
deleting the Internet Logs folder. Just in case this may be helpful
to you, or anyone else, here is a "generic" set of instructions for
refreshing/rebuilding a corrupt ZoneAlarm database:

[Please note that this will remove your program permissions and Local
Zone settings, so you may want to make note of them. However,
re-establishing them is a simple process. You will be prompted again
for program access for all the applications that you use to access the
local network or Internet.]

- Step 1. Open the ZoneAlarm program, go into the Overview Preferences
tab and turn off "Load ZoneAlarm at startup".

- Step 2. If you are running Windows 95, 98, ME, or 2000, reboot your
system into either Safe Mode or to a Command Prompt. The method is
determined by your OS, but most systems will boot into safe mode by
either pressing F8 at the beep or holding the CTRL key during bootup.
You should now have no ZoneAlarm processes running on your system.

- Step 3. Open the Internet Logs directory (in 95/98/ME this will be
"C:\Windows\Internet Logs", in NT and 2000 it will be
"C:\Winnt\Internet Logs", in Windows XP it could be either of these
folders), where you will find a file named "iamdb.rdb" and a file
named after your computer with the ".ldb" extension. Delete both of
these files. If "backup.rdb" exists, delete it also.

- Step 4. Make sure that you EMPTY your Recycle Bin BEFORE rebooting
back into normal mode.

- Step 5. You will need to start ZoneAlarm manually. (Click "Start,"
"Programs," "Zone Labs" and either "ZoneAlarm" or "Zone Labs
Security"). ZoneAlarm will start up again with a fresh database. Each
program should ask for access again if the files were properly
deleted.

- Step 6. Be sure to RECHECK the "Load ZoneAlarm at startup".

A faster way to fix this problem in ZoneAlarm is to just add the site
update.microsoft.com under the site list in the privacy settings and enable
mobile code so Active X will not get blocked. There is no need to
uninstall/reinstall.
