I tried what Sky King said to do and it worked! I had 26 updates that needed
to be done. My computer would also take about 5 minutes to shut down. Now
everything is working back up to speed. I also defraged and cleaned up some
unneeded things. Thank you Sky King! I was at my wits end.

On the Start/Run line enter: net stop wuauserv

Open Explorer and Delete these folders:
....\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\SelfUpdate
....\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\WebSetup
....\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\WuRedir
....\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\AuthCabs
....\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore
....\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download

On the Start/Run line enter: net start wuauserv

Restart the computer, being sure you log in with an account that has full
Administrator privileges. Then open one instance of IE and give the Windows
Update site another try.

This is quite similar to what Pat Walters posted, but includes the other WU
related
folders that may pertain."

I am not sure what you mean by open Explorer and delete folders. I gather not
Internet Explorer. What other Explorer is there? Sorry if this sounds dumb.
If I can find the files I will delete them. Will a search for the files work?

No, not Internet Explorer. They mean to open Windows Explorer, it's
the "file manager" on your system.

Folders, not files. A search may work, just try it and see.
