SFC and older XP install CD's

I had problems with Win XP Pro after auto updating from MS over the Internet.
They were fixed after I ran SFC /PURGECACHE and SFC /SCANNOW. The cache was
re-populated from my XP installation CD.

The computer had been updated to XP Pro SP2 via the Internet. The CD was
SP1a. Is my computer now running a combination of SP1a and SP2?

If so what do I do about it? I went to Windows Update site but it didn't
find anything to update. Thank you.

The SFC will not overwrite existing hotfixes or Service Pack files.
SFC in Windows XP will look in Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 for updated files.
The XP CD is only required for core files that have not been changed by subsequent
Service Pack updates.

As long as you did not delete the Windows directory that contains the
downloaded Service Pack files, SFC will use the updated SP files when
running SFC.

MS-MVP Kelly Theriot has the explanation you are looking for.

down to "SP1 - System File Checker".
