Updates FAIL
Using windows XP... go to Updates, it checks my system, lists Updates needed,
I click custom or express (does not matter), and window opens,.. lists all
updates, when i try to do the update, it lists them and then says FAILED out
to the right. I have turned off my firewall (just to make sure) and even my
Panda virus Protection, still nothing... and Yes, I am connected to the
internet (lol) any thoughts ?????

I posted concerning a similar problem and I guess you and I win this
round of "stump the chumps". I never got an answer.
Sooo... I did what I always do. I dinked around with my computer until
I finally got it to work. Here's what worked for me. I went to Control
Panel | Security Center | Automatic Updates and chose the option to
have the system automatically download and install the updates.
It did this at the next system shut down and now all updates are
nicely in place. I then went back and shut off the automatic update
option.
Another thing I was going to try was booting up into Safe Mode with
network support and try updating the system. Didn't have to try it so
I can't tell ya how that would work out...but it seems like it would
work.
Hope this works for ya...

I have a similar problem. I posted this here and several other technical
forums. Everybody has similar "websites" to go to for instructions and
similar stories. I have tried 15 solutions from HOSTS to Cyptographic to
CATroot2 to shutting down firewalls and McAfee Virus, etc and NONE of this
has helped my XP Pro SP2 windows update problem....I'm still
stumped....WIndows finds the updates it needs, but when I click to have them
installed I get "unable to successfully install" ..."failed". I am open to
any and all suggestions.

Exact same issues with my XPpro w/SP2, KDJ_TU
Last night I tried what DM suggested below so we'll see - nothing
happened right away, must be one of those 'takes time' things. ;-)
I have stopped letting my system send those weird little explanations
'home' after a system failure. Figure if I can't get the future
updates, there's no sense in sending the reports. XPpro can be a real
pain in the ass. I have an XPhome machine on the same network that
works fine.
