how to turn off automatic updates.

somehow I have turned on automatic updates to install at 3:00 am.Trouble is,
the install stuffs my network and I have to go back to a previous restore
point to get my system working again. And the next night it happens all over
again.
I can't turn off automatic updates because nothing can be changed in the
auto update config tool.
The only way I have been able to stop the cycle is to stop the services
associated with auto update.
Anyone have any ideas?

Turning Off Windows Update in Windows XP

Setting auto-update to manual can be accomplished by clicking on the Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, Services, double-click "Automatic Updates", and use the spin box to change
"Automatic" to "Manual", click "Apply", OK

Ok. I can turn it off; have already accomplished that. Now how do I turn it
back on so that I can do the updates when I want? I cannot change ANYTHING in
automatic updates because it is all "greyed out".

“The Windows Update Service is not available" and all of the check boxes and
drop-down menus are greyed out. This can happen if the Automatic Update service is
disabled.
Click Start, select Run and type: Services.msc
Press Enter
Locate the - "Automatic Update"
Make sure the service is not disabled and started.
"The Windows Update Service is not available" and all of the check boxes and
drop-down menus are greyed out. Automatic Update Service is missing from the
services.msc list.
Can happen if the wuaueng.dll file is not registered.
Register the file wuaueng.dll:
Click Start, select Run
Type: regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
Press OK.

I did as suggested. All of the check boxes are still greyed out in the
automatic update config app.

Thank you for that. Deleting the registry entries fixed up the problem.
