IE6 Error after KB896358 Update
I have an XP-Home SP2 system, and having problems with one or all of the
following updates installed 6-15-05:
KB896358
KB890046
KB896422
KB896428
KB883939
KB893066
KB890830
Installation History log indicates that installation was "successful" for
all of the above.

When I initiate IE6 (MSN.com) I get the following error panel: "MSN ERROR
REPORTING", "MSN Experienced Internal Error", with following Error
Signature: AppName: msn.exe, AppVer: 9.10.11.1703, Mod Name:
wininet.dll, ModVer: 6.0.2900.2668, Offset: 0001b820. After the error is
reported to Microsoft, IE6 closes out.

I have found that I can RESTORE to 6-14-05 configuration and everything
works, so it must be one or more of the "upgrades" not playing well with
others. I have now changed "Auto updates" to just "download with MANUAL
install" so that the above upgrades will not get reinstalled.

Is anyone else getting this error? And where and how are these "upgrades"
stored and identified?

I don't use MSN but after installing the hot fixes all of my fonts were
blurry and discolored, once I removed them things went back to normal.
When I'm in the mood I'll install them one at a time to see which one is the
culprit.

I believe I have located six of the downloaded "update" files in:
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\ - - - -
(KB896358) - - - -\836d3968070ab62a086b67f1c6e551d1\update
(KB890046) - - - -\90ab7a7d58cf9102adba0adb5ddf1362\update
(KB896422) - - - -\73c38420ed6fcb4d7aee2a7564af0e8f\update
(KB896428) - - - -\ee626d72680ff2619246a1cf5516f892\update
(KB883939) - - - -\18f704c05de93348e71fb7005eeea05\update
(KB893066) - - - -\bc2e08df13ade612507748ca3eefdc83\update

Now, to try installing each - - one at a time. Descriptions in MS
Knowledge Base are very "general," but all seem to have some possible
association with the wininet.dll file.

Try reinstalling them all and uninstalling *only* the subject update? <eg>

http://support.microsoft.com/search/default.aspx?spid=global&query=KB896358+OR+896358&catalog=LCID%3D1033&pwt=false&title=false&kt=BOOLEAN&mdt=0&comm=1&ast=1&ast=2&ast=3&mode=a

(Apparently there is more than one problem symptom associated
with 896358. Workarounds are being documented so perhaps
you could even leave it installed too.)

Good luck
