Windows XP Firewall

My XPpro indicates that the firewall is shutoff however I still
occasionally get firewall warnings indicating that a firewall is
stopping something from occurring even though it is shut off. I
credit this problem as a possibility with my inability to get the
latest downloads from MS so... How does one dump the XP firewall
permenantly? ( it's as if there's a broken switch and it will not
shut off). TIA

Could be Spyware trying to hijack you. Download, install, update and run all
of the following.
Ad-Aware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
Spybot search and destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (Beta)
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
If none of the above fixes the issue then download Hijack this, run it, save
a copy of the log file and cut and paste it back here to the group so that
it can be analyzed.

Yes I did. I use Zone Alarm with a Router (w/built in firewall) so
keep the Windows Firewall shut off. Interesting that an XPhome
machine on my network that is behind the router w/Zone Alarm updates
just fine but the XPpro machine will not (presumably because of
firewall issues).
