I have completed recent updates on my mother's computer, as well as my own.
Both OP programs are XP Home Edition. I downloaded two anti-virus programs
on both systems, "AVG" from Grisoft, & "Avast" from Alwil Software. Since
the newest updates, "Avast" has kept finding Win32 Trojan Horse virus
infection on both systems. Is it possible that the most recent updates were
infected with different types of Trojan Horse virus??

No.
It could have come from opening email or her clicking on an executable file she downloaded.
Click Tools, Options, Read, and Uncheck "Automatically download messages in preview pane".
and/or
Click View, Layout, and uncheck "Preview Pane"
Add "Preview Pane" to your toolbar, (right-click the toolbar, "customise"). Now you can toggle
it on and off as needed.
Click Tools, Options, Read, "View messages in plain text only", "Apply"
That will disable the embedded Javascript, and ActiveX and save you the grief of activating any
malicious script & pop-ups.
This is a link to a small FREE program by McAfee Anti-virus named Stinger.
It will scan your system for 53 known viruses and trojans and repair them.
You don't need McAfee anti-virus installed on your computer... this is a
