How can I get this to install. It says it is a critical update. I have tried
numerous times and each time it fails to install. Answer please to correct
this.

Your Windows folder is likely either C:\Windows or C:\WINNT. Find your Windows folder using Windows Explorer.
Locate file KB893066.log
Attach a copy of it in a reply-post here.
Look at your Windows Update log:
See if there is an "Error" for the date(s) when you had this problem.
It will have an entry (entries) with Error that would help to pin-down your pc's problem with Windows Update on-line functions.
C:\Windows\Windows Update.log (for Win98/Me)
C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log (for Win2000/XP / servers) (these systems may have Windows at folder WINNT )
You need to find the specific exception code number when you have an install failure.

Hi,
If you download and install it manually, what happens then:

I hit the link you inserted and tried the download that way. It also failed.
received the error "cannot copy the file update_SP2QFE.inf"
When I closed that, I got "data error (cyclyic redundancy check).
When I closed that, I got "KB93066 installation did not complete. Windows XP
has been partially updated and may not run properly."
Have I now made things worse?

My guess is that this means that you don't have sufficient permissions
on the account that you used to do the download.
Try switching to the Administrator account to complete the install?
This might be sufficient if you can figure out which program to run:
<title>HOW TO: Use the RUN AS Command to Start a Program as an
Administrator in Windows XP</title>
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;305780&FR=1&PA=1&SD=HSCH
(Win-F1 Boolean search for titles only
"Run As" AND Administrator
)
....

BTW do you have the latest version of the installer?
(A recent critical update from WU apparently.)
<title>Windows Installer 3.1 (v2) is available</title>

Good luck

How do I detect if I have the latest version?

Check if you have that update showing in Add/Remove Programs?
(with Show Updates checked)
Alternatively open a cmd window and enter this pipeline:
systeminfo | find /i "893803"
I don't have it yet so I don't know what the module versions
involved in that update are. Perhaps the MBSA knows it?
The question was just to elicit more information about your
symptom which could be relevant.

Yes, I checked the add/remove and I do have windows installer 3.1(KB893803)
When I look in the file KB893066.log - the last few lines read:
install. Return STATUS_READY_TO_INSTALL
23.264: dumpDownloadTask returned 0xf201 (ready to install)
24.596: KB893066 installation did not complete.
24.596: Update.exe extended error code = 0xf201
My Windows update log gets this:
Install failed: 80070017
So, I am unable to install the update.

That's the cyclic redundancy check again.
I still think that is it just as likely to be an erroneous symptom
of a permissions problem as an indication of an actual corrupt file.
Unless you are getting clearer clues elsewhere as to which "file"
is supposedly corrupt or inaccessible I would trace all accesses
(reads and writes) to: SoftwareDistribution;Update;CatRoot
using FileMon (freeware from SysInternals). Note that the above
string is a suggested input filter which should interleave reads
and writes to both of the main AU data repositories, including
writes to the log.
Good luck
