I have XP Home e/w SP2 and IGB Ram.

Microsoft released a bunch of security patches this week. I loaded them and
immediately started to have some issues with my PC.

I lost the sound ( get the Windows start and close down sounds only),
restore point and security center (I can manually restart them - using
services.msc - but the restoration does not stick thru a reboot). It also
apparently messed up my ability to get into the internet (I have to manually
restore - using netsh - TCP/IP and WINSOCK). I may have lost other stuff
but I just have not encountered more issues at this time.

I ran three (3) different virus scanners and I do not have a virus.

I had a similar problem. I set a manual restore point before I installed the
Windows Updates (8 updates). Everything went normally and I rebooted. After
encountering several problems I decided to do a system restore to remove the
Updates. Only to find the all my Restore Points had disappeared, including
the one I had just set.

I had/have other problems as well. See my post of 6/15 "Windows Update
Mess." I have contacted Microsoft by phone and email but unfortunately
haven't recieved information that has been of any use in addressing the
problems these updates have caused.

You're not alone. I downloaded the 'Magnificent Seven' <I already had dld
Windows Installer 3.1 last week> and they all downloaded just fine, but NONE
install. I've tried 4 times since Wednesday with the same results. THEN
something wierd happened this morning as I was getting ready to start
emailing Microsoft.
I went to block and copy the "results" failure info so I could include it in
my email.
What appeared when I pasted the copied info into a blank notepad document
was an extra line of type that does NOT appear on the WU website:

Security Update for Windows XP (KB896422)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB896428)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP Service Pack

Error: There is not enough disk space to install the update(s). Free
additional space on your hard disk and then try again.

The "ERROR:" line above is NOT shown on the screen on the WU website, but it
DID copy to Notepad.......
Anyway, I've got more than 4GB free on a 10GB harddrive so I think Microsoft
has got some real issues cranking here.
NO PROBLEM, they'll probably just issue a patch that will allow us to patch
the patch.
I wish They'd hurry up and release Longhorn cuz I hear it comes with three
free rolls of duct tape.

I have a 80GB hard drive so that should not be my problem. My firewall is
ZoneAlarm and I also have a hardware firewall. I use AVG as my antivirus -
ran it and no issues. I also downloaded and ran AVAST and McAfee and no
problems.

This thing may also have some association wiht time - my TCP/IP and WINSOCK
restores do not seem to hold for 24 hours ( tried just getting everything
working and then leaving my machine on).

I opened my computer this mornig to find it had been rebooted by Windows
Updater automatically installing updates...
I tried opening a link in Outlook and was prompted for Browers Information
....I was unable to find Inernet Explorer...
I had problems opening Internet Explorer at all..Or my other browser based
on Inernet Explorer...
I was forced to Restore to an earlier point...6/16/2005...
I tried finding out any other option and this posting was the only
information I could find.
I only wonder what problems I will have on continuing updates...

I have tried to send an email to MS Support (paid version). This just
"hangs" my machine (seems to collect data and then hangs).
