All Windows Updates Fail
Windows Update fails to install any of the 8 critical updates it finds. The
last successfull update I received was Microsoft Installer 3.1 in May. It was
previously suggested in an earlier thread to turn off automatic updates, then
to "C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log and rename the file", start automatic
updates, then rerun Windows Updates. I can't find windowsupdate.log and
how/what do I rename the file? Thanks for your patience.

Same here. I just get the same error code each time, 0xC80003FA, but is this
caused by the servers being busy?

Well, there are now three of us. There is no explanation or error message
provided as to why it fails.

I get no error code. My history shows that the Installer 3.1 was successfully
installed (no updates thereafter). I downloaded the Information Tool from
Microsoft. Now in add/remove programs the Installer and 5 Hotfixes are blank
where "installed & date" should be. Could this be that the Installer was not
loaded successfully and that I need to install it again? If so, where can I
find it?

To do the rename, you have to stop the Automatic Update service, and then
rename the file WindowsUpdate.log in %Windir% that is probably c:\Windows.
Don't forget to restart the service after renaming the file. You can rename
it whatever you want (ex. WindowsUpdate.log.bak).
And the problem happened to me too... Since June 14, Automatic Update wasn't
able to update my 45 computers except for one only.

I too have Window XP Home Edition download failures this month, nor notices
from Windows Update which is set on automatic. Unfortunately this coincided
with the installation of new spyware and AntiVirus programmes so I have been
running over these to see what the problem was! It seems, then, that it is
nothing to do with them.
I tried Martin's suggestion to rename WindowsUpdate.log but it refused to do
this because it claimed the file was open somewhere - I don't know where. I
did turn of the automatic update.
I hope the boffins at Microsoft are on this case.
I found an answer that works from another site! My Update is working again!

If you haven't tried it already, there is a brand new ''Version 6'' of
Windows Updates For Windows XP SP2..In order to make it work correctly,
you'll need to download and install the version 2 of the Windows Installer
3.1. (see note below)Do it this way.
Click on the link below to download and install the newest installer:
Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable (v2)
Once the new Windows Installer is installed, then open Internet Explorer and
click on the link below to take you to the new Windows Update site:
http://update.microsoft.com
Once there, you'll need to install a new ActiveX control and follow the
prompts twice to install it but then you'll be able to click on the a new
''Custom'' button. The site looks very much the same but scans a little
quicker than the previous one.
Hope this helps.

NOTE....I verified which version of Installer I had with the following
directions:
To determine which version of Windows Installer is currently installed on
the computer, follow these steps:1. In Windows Explorer, locate the following
file:
Msi.dll
This file is located in the Windows\System 32 folder.
2. Right-click Msi.dll, and then click Properties.
3. Click the Version tab. Note the file version number.• If the version
number is 3.1.4000.1823, the computer has Windows Installer 3.1 (v1)
installed.
• If the version number is 3.1.4000.2435, the computer has Windows Installer
3.1 (v2) installed.
Thank you all for your suggestions. Many heads are better than one!

It didnt work, for me when I tried do rename the windows update log. I used a
small program called unlocker, to unlock the program that used the file, and
then I could rename it. But the problems was still there. No installation of
the update. I had before that, download the new windows installer 3.1 v2. I
solved the problem temporary, by download the updates från MS Download and
install it manually, one by one.
