Rodney,
Check the Windows Explorer "View" options --- set it to show you all folders; all system folders; & hidden files.
Bring up Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options/ select VIEW Tab and look at all of settings listed.
"CHECK" (turn on) Display the contents of system folders.
Under column, Hidden files and folders----choose ( *select* ) Show hidden files and folders.
Next, un-check Hide extensions for known file types.
Next un-check Hide protected operating system files.
The following thanks to Harish G [MSFT] & Pat Walters [MSFT].
Review the permission on the softwaredistribution folder. Follow the
below given procedure to fix this problem. (Credit goes to Harish G [MSFT])
<Quote>
If you are using windows XP Professional:
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type: %windir%
4. Press <Enter> or click OK. If prompted, click "Show these files and
folders"
5. Right-click on the folder "SoftwareDistribution" (notice no space between
software and distribution)
6. Click Properties
7. Click the Security tab
8. In the "Group or user names" click on the Administrators to select them.
9. In the "Permissions for Administrators, make sure "Full Control" is
checked (even if grayed out)
10. Click Advanced
11. Make sure you are on the Permissions tab
12. Again, select the Administrators group
13. Select the checkbox "Replace permission entries on all child objects
with entries..."
14. Click the Owner tab
15. With Administrators selected, check the box "Replace owner on
subcontainers and objects"
16. Click OK out of the Advanced Security Settings for SoftwareDistribution.
Confirm you want to take the actions you took.
17. Click OK again, this time out of SoftwareDistribution Properties.
18. Close the window open to C:\Windows, or whatever directory correlates
with %windir% from step 3.
19. Click Start
20. Click Run
21. Type: services.msc
22. When this window opens, verify that both of the following services are
started. If they are not, start them:
a. Automatic Updates
b. Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
If you are using Windows XP Home Edition:
1. Reboot the machine and enter Safe Mode.
a. Reboot the machine
b. Just as the machine goes black and is starting to come up, start
pressing F8 every one second.
c. Repeat the previous step until you obtain a menu, and in that menu is
an entry "Safe Mode"
2. Login as an administrator
3. Perform steps 1-18 above
4. Reboot
5. Perform steps 19-22 above
</End quote>
Post back here with your findings and status.

Look at your log file for Windows Update.
Please post an *extract* from it.
Use Notepad or Wordpad and open & look at the Windows Update log file
C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log or C:\WINNT\WindowsUpdate.log
Scroll down all the way. Get / copy / paste (ideally, put into a file & attach in repy ) back here the set of lines for (today's ) the last session.
