Which Windows version/updates?

Before installation deselect services which are running in background
(BTW: deactivated Norton AV is not enough - you also have to deactivate
your Desktop Firewall(s)).

If after that still leaving patching-problems, your system seems to
be infected with spyware or even with more harmful malware than a PF.
In this case reinstall and then update your system before going online
(i.e. by a "clean" USB stick).

Service Pack 2 is well-known to prepare problems if the system was
infected with Spyware or more harmful things already.

Are you really sure that at this time your system was not yet secretly
infected. The malware simply slept... in your proximity?
