Thank God we have people like "demodan" in the user group community!
Your procedure fixed the problem nicely!
Why do you think it is that Microsoft refuses to publish your solution on
their "knowledge" Base?
I believe there are millions of users out there having this problem and not
knowing what to do.
Microsoft should hire intelligent people like you instead of the dummies
they actually have!

.......Thank god also that my LINUX installation is progressing really well.
I still keep the Windows XP CRAP around (in dual boot) because of those
"windows only" devices I am still infected with. I don't know why I even
bother updating Windows XP when I use it so little. 2005 will be the year of
freedom from the MICROSOFT EVIL Empire!

It looks to me that demodan did what you did--searched for somebody
else's solution. But he didn't credit who posted it or link to a specific post.

FWIW it looks as if the credit might go to Dave (UK) who posted this
as cellodavid on 2004-08-26:

http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&mid=c1528731-602e-426f-8876-f1de4d1ec74a

(Web interface search of this newsgroup with
KB842773 uninstall reinstall
)

Notice that that was not the terminology that Dave (UK) used
but fortunately his idea was reworded by Candice which made
that whole thread discoverable using that search. In fact I now
notice that demodan used the word deleting instead of uninstall
but that wasn't helpful for trying to find what he probably found
because so far it only finds this thread. I suspect other threads
might be found with other verb endings or other synonyms for
the above two words. If somebody else posted earlier the same
idea with that equivalent terminology then they should get the credit
for the idea instead. If somebody is interested in finding out
if Dave (UK) really deserves the credit for this idea they could
use Google Groups and string as many synonyms and verb ending
combinations joined by a Boolean OR operator as Google Groups'
input box will allow. (Unfortunately no newsgroup search tool
supports the concept of stemming or searching for like words,
as the old DejaNews and AltaVista News sites used to do.
If they did we could use expressions such as install* reinstall*
to capture the equivalent of

(install OR installing OR installed) (reinstall OR reinstalling OR reinstalled)

Etc.)

Notice also that this solution will not apply to users who already have
XPsp2 installed, since that update supersedes this patch. In fact,
this patch is a prequisite for installing XPsp2 over the net.

Noel Patton's solution is easier and has more testimony associated
with it but makes even less sense for this particular code.
According to

http://docxp.mvps.org/WU5-ERR.htm

the code means: "Network connection was not available"

BTW notice that Noel credits TaurArian by quoting her
who in turn I am sure would have credited someone else
at least the first time she suggested the idea.

Why do you think they "refuse to publish" it? Do you know that anybody
has notified them of this solution and received a message saying that?

My guess is that even if it has been reported to Microsoft that there is not
enough credible evidence yet to make either solution supported by anything
more than anecdotes. A solution has to have some basis of fact and
understanding before it becomes documentable.
