I have just tried to install the various updates listed below. None worked.
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1
Security Update for Windows XP (KB896358)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB890046)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB896422)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB896428)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP Service Pack
2 (KB883939)
Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB898458)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB893066)
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - June 2005 (KB890830)
There is no explanation as to why the install failed and despite my best
efforts I have not yet found an explanation on the support pages.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Try this:
1. go to the services on your computer (from Control Panel or
start-->runservices.msc)
2. stop Automatic updates.
3. minimize services, then to to C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log and rename
the file.
4. start the automatic update service.
5. rerun Windows Updates.

Seems I am in the same boat. Update recommends 8 updates (one of which I
allready have) then tells me the updates were unable to be installed
successfully.
KB896358, KB890046, KB896422, KB896428, KB883939, KB898458, KB893066 (listed
in my add/remove programs) and KB890830. Same updates as kmackayca without
the .Net Framework 1.1. Service Pack 1. I'd hate to miss important security
updates:( I haven't a clue either.

go into advanced mode and remove the KB898458 update. This worked for me. I
still can't install 898458 but the others are all working now.
