After downloading and installing C Media Electronics Incorporation - Sound -
C-Media AC97 Audio Device, I have lost all sound. Can someone please help me?

First off, create a restore point: (Just in case you want to go back, or something goes wrong.
You never know with MS...) Click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore

Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, System
Click the "Hardware" tab
Click the "Device Manager" button
Click the + on "Sound, video and game controllers"
Right-click "Vinyl'97 codec combo driver (WDM)", select "Properties"
Click the "Driver" tab
Click the "Roll Back Driver" button and roll it back.
Reboot the computer

You won't get a choice when rolling it back, so just go with whatever it selects.
When you roll it back, Windows might complain about the driver not being certified, but just
continue anyway and restart when prompted.

I've the same problem...
I'ce a realtek embedded sound card and windows update show me updates for
C-Media and if I install them the sound card won't work.
I think that Windows Update mis-recognize the sound card.

Dear Unk,
I have a similar problem. The difference is I don't have "Vinyl'97 codec
combo driver (WDM)" listed under sound, video and game controllers. I did
roll back the driver of C-Media AC97 though. It still shows no audio device
and says 'your sound card may be in use' when I tried playing windows sound.
Would you happen to know how to fix it? Or anyone else has encountered the
same problem?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Reboot, and Windows will find the new device and install the drivers automatically.

You can also double-click the C-Media AC97 entry, "Driver" tab. "Update Driver" button. That
brings up the Hardware Update Wizard. Click "Install from a list....", Next, click "Don't
search, I'll choose", Next, check "Show compatable hardware", and there should be two entries"
The one that's highlighted is the current driver, the other is the old one. Select it and click
Next, and follow the rest of the directions.

If that fails to restore the sound, download the Belarc Advisor Free Personal PC Audit tool.
Under "Multimedia" is the sound card info. Use that info to download the drivers from:

Thanks a lot for your reply.

After I deleted C-Media and reboot PC, C-Media still came back with a "!" --
cannot start. Trying to update the driver, I did see two entries but both
said Avance AC97. I just thougught I would click on it anyway, but I was
then required to insert an Avance audio CD, which I don't have. (BTW, I
think the audio function is built in my VIA mainboard.) Using DriverGuide
Toolkit, I found Avance AC'97 Audio for VIA and C-Media AC97 installed, while
Belarc Advisor Free Personal PC Audit tool only showed C-Media AC97
installed. Another confusing thing is Currently only C-Meia is lited in
Add/Remove Program, not Avance AC97.

As Avance has ceased its business, I checked out my windows installation
history and found the previous update was Avance Logic Inc AC97 version
5.10.00.3800. Unfortunately, I still could not find the driver on internet.
I did find one called Avance Logic Inc AC97 version version 5.10.00.3620.
Could I just install this one? (i.e. install from my disk) Also, do I need
to first uninstall C-Media?

Sorry for the second message. I just located the original driver from my
VIA CD and updated C-Media with Avance AC97. Task manager says it's working
properly and both DriverGuide Toolkit and Belarc Advisor detected only Avance
AC97 now. However, under Control Panel/Add/Remover Programs, it only shows
the entry of C-Media. I thought Avance would overwrite C-Media after the
update. The worst thing is I still cannot command the audio function. I am
tempted to install a newer driver (Avance Logic Inc Media Driver
version5.10.00.3850) but really afraid even worse nightmare would come to me.
Any more advice?

Go ahead and install it. This is not a "nightmare", this is how we learn... Software can't
damage hardware, so the worst that can happen is that we wasted some time in exchange for some
experience and knowledge. If it comes to worst, uninstall ALL the C-Media software and drivers
from the Control panel and Device Manager, and use the original driver CD that came with the
motherboard to get it working again.

First, thanks a lot for your help and patience.

Indeed, it took me two days to solve the problems and I finally figured it
out using all possible resources.

First, I could never get rid of the C-Media entry in the Add/Remove Program
list even after I rolled back to Avance 3570 or install Avance 3850 and Task
Manager says it's working properly. I then learned how to edit the registry
from some IT forum and finally removed it from the list. (The C-Media update
is really a nightmare never going away!! I doubt if I am supposed to do any
hardaware update from Microsoft ever. Why would they provide an update of
C-Media driver for an Avance device?)

As for the working properly but no sound issue, the major cause is my
default audio device was changed to modem line at some point when I did
windows update without my notice. All I need to do is set Avance back to
default device, which looks like an easy step but surely a hard-earned lesson
for me.

Glad you sorted it out.
You can eliminate the update from being offered again by going to the Windows Update site:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
Click on "Custom Install: High Priority and Optional Updates for Your Computer"
When you see the offered update, check the box to hide it.
