Windows Update Problem

My wife works at a school and they are having problems with their PC. They
are running XP with SP2 installed. They use AOL dial-up connection.

The first problem I saw was that when you run windows udate it opens the URL
that it should and waits awhile and the word done comes up on the bottom of
the screen. The second URL with V5 never comes up. If you use IE to connect
to URL's most work ok but some when you request data it just sits there and
does nothing comes back.

The second problem I saw is that if you select System Restore under
Programs, Accessories, System tools the first time you get nothing back. If
you select it again you get the restore screen window which is blank except
for the words System Restore in the upper right hand corner. I tried to stop
and restart System Restore under control panel, System but that didn'ty fix
the problem.

The third problem I saw is that if you select services under control panel ,
administrative tools, you get the screen but there is a blue box in the area
where select an item to view it description should be and there are no
services listed. If you change the tab from extended to standard you get a
list of the services.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Rick

Well the plot changes. I found out that someone did a un-install of Norton
Anti-Virus on the PC. They heard that they get free anti virsus seeing that
they use AOL. It looks as if along the way somehow windows scripting got
destroyed. I re-installed windows scripting and the problems with system
restore and services running went away. The problems of getting data from
other URL's also went away. The only problem I have left is with windows
update. I now get the v5 screen. But after I select custon install it starts
running and comes back with a error message Windows has encountered an error.
It has a code of 0x800A01AD. I went under windows update and did a find on
that code. I think I tried every thing they gave me to do and it still will
not run.
