Automatic Windows Updates?

Why the heck is Microsoft forcing video driver updates to be automatically
installed? Microsoft in the past did not automatically install driver
updates. I thought Automatic Windows Updates were only for critical fixes.
Once again Microsoft is forcing updates on us that do not need to be
installed!

Sean,
I think you need to be more specific in your complaint. Which video
card drivers are they wanting to update?

James,
At least on my computer, an update for the integrated Intel videochipset was
displayed as part of the Automatic Updates this morning. More specifically,
it is the Intel 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family.
After I installed it, I ran into some problems which I was able to fix (see
my reply in the thread "Dell Video Disaster" from 6/9/2005). However, I am
sure that this is going to cause some IT managers a lot of grief today.

I'm an IT manager at a car dealership and today some of our computers
auto updated to the new video drivers and it causes the computer to
start up in 4 bit color and unable to change the screen diemensions.
I've had to go back to a previous version of the driver off of dell's
website to get around this. I hate how MS now forces us to download
this. I now have to tell windows update to never download this update.

For me, when it initially installed that that display driver, "82865G",
bluescreened at reboot. Thankfully the next time I rebooted I guess xp
reverted back to the old driver, but now it keeps prompting me to re-install
the update, and every time it fails. How do I tell it to not to prompt me to
install this SPECIFIC update?.
