Windows 98 does not use windowsupdate any more as far as I know - I think ME
still does but you will have to manually download any updates for 98 if
there are any.

Not quite, John. Critical updates for Windows 98 will still be offered
at Windows Update.
From any Security bulletin :

" How does the extended support for Windows 98, Windows 98 Second
Edition, and Windows Millennium Edition affect the release of security
updates for these operating systems?

Microsoft will only release security updates for critical security
issues. Non-critical security issues are not offered during this support
period. For more information about the Microsoft Support Lifecycle
policies for these operating systems, visit the following Web site.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=LifeAn1 "

From the above link :

" Details:
Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition support was scheduled to end on
January 16, 2004. The continual evaluation of the Support Lifecycle
policy revealed, however, that customers in the smaller and the emerging
markets needed additional time to upgrade their product. Therefore,
Microsoft will continue to support Windows 98, Windows 98 Second
Edition, and Windows Me through June 30, 2006.

Critical security updates will be provided on the Windows Update site
through June 30, 2006.

Microsoft will not publicly release non-critical security hotfixes for
Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, or Windows Millennium Edition.
However, customers may request a non-critical security hotfix through
On-Demand Security Hotfix support, which is offered for these products
through June 30, 2006. When a request is received, Microsoft will
investigate the issue and try to provide an appropriate response to the
customer. "

Jackie.

What have you done as to what "they" suggested so far ? Giving you steps
to take that you've already tried won't be offered if you provide this
information.

Could you please state what the issue is ... i.e. can not access the
update site, can not download updates, can not install updates.etc. ?

Ok, thanks. So it is still providing critical updates.

Hello,

Not to hi-jack the thread, but I have the same problem after upgrading
McAfee to VirusScan 9.0. (Previous VirusScan v.5 was not supported any
longer, even though it was much friendlier to Win98.) Since installation 2
weeks ago, Critical Update Notification has run every 5 min as recommended
without incident. Last nite (06-10-05) Windows Update ran for the first time
since VScan upgrade & failed for the first time ever, with Error #0x800B0004.
I too have followed steps associated with this Error, using the Windows
Update Troubleshooter at http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/:

-------- BEGIN HELP FILE INFO --------------
Problem Reaching Windows Update:

While the Windows Update site is loading, you receive Initialization Error
0x800B0004 or Error 0x800B0003.

Problem Description:
Unable to access the Windows Update site. The Windows Update.log file
contains the following error message(s):

Error IUCTL Digital Signatures on file C:\Program
Files\WindowsUpdate\V4\iuident.cab are not trusted (Error 0x800B0003: The
form
specified for the subject is not one supported or known by the specified
trust
provider.)

MY ERROR ****** Error IUCTL Digital Signatures on file C:\Program
Files\WindowsUpdate\V4\iuident.cab are not trusted (Error 0x800B0004: The
subject is not trusted for the specified action.) ****** MY ERROR

Resolutions:
There are several potential causes for this error. First of all, make sure
you are running the current version of Internet Explorer. At this time, the
current version is IE 6 SP1. You can install IE 6 SP1 from this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.asp

Secondly, if you are using a proxy server ask your network administrator to
make sure that the proxy server is set to allow anonymous connections to the
Internet.

Some more specific steps you can try to resolve this issue:

Suggestion 1
============
Register the following files with these steps:

1. Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 SOFTPUB.DLL" (w/o the quotes).
You should see a popup message that this process succeeded.
2. Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 INITPKI.DLL" (w/o the quotes).
You should see a popup message that this process succeeded.
3. Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 MSSIP32.DLL" (w/o the quotes).
You should see a popup message that this process succeeded.
4. Now try the Windows Update site and see if you get the same error.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Suggestion 2
============
Open Internet Explorer
Click "Tools" and then click "Internet Options".
Click "Advanced," and then check "Use HTTP 1.1 through Proxy Connections"
check box.
Click the OK button.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Suggestion 3
============
If there is a HOSTS (or HOSTS.SAM) file on your system that has an entry for
the Windows Update site, then comment out or delete the entry. The IP
addresses of the site change constantly so you don't want to have any static
IP entries.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Issue Applies To:
Windows 98
-------- END OF HELP FILE INFO --------------

1. My Log file contains the Error message noted by ******. (Each 5 min
entry/check shows OK, however.)
2. Suggestion 1, Steps 1 & 2 succeeded, Step 3 gives Error Message:
LoadLibrary("MSSIP32.DLL") failed. GetLastError returns 0x00000002., Step 4
failed.
3. Suggestion 2 made no difference.
4. Suggestion 3 didn't apply either.
5. Reinstalled IE6SP1 from newly downloaded file. No difference.
6. Repeated the above steps. No difference.
7. Connected to Windows Update with VScan disabled. No difference.

I am currently working my way thru the Windows Update Checklist
(http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/updtcl.htm) but it's a tedious process. Any
help/hints/shortcuts would be gratefully appreciated, speaking for myself and
probably the original poster as well.

I don't know of any other way to get Critical Updates, and with Windows
Update not operating properly, I can't even select to see what I have
installed; all of the Menu choices except for "Get Help" and "About Windows
Update" are greyed out. :o(

Regards,
Lauren
