HELP? HAS MS CHANGED UPDATE KB891711?

Hi,
Everytime I do Windows update I am offered KB891711.

I am loathe to download because it caused me horrendous problems when I
first had it on.
It caused Blue-Sreen crashes and locked my son out of his online Final
Fantasy game for months until I realise the problems had started at the
update time. I unchecked from Startup and had no further probs. Since then I
see many thousands of people had a similar problem, some even bought new
computers!
So, I go to MS website and look for an apology/explanation or a reassurance
that this monumental foul-up was corrected...........but all I can find is
KB891711
I sent MS "feedback" asking for clarification but got no response nor
Website/Update changes

Has this terrible update been corrected?
Why isn't there a warning about it on the MS Website?
Can't MS understand that after the horrendous problems this caused, people
can't just download it again?

Advice anyone please?

Eljay

Hi Eljay,

KB891711 was updated and re-released on April 12:

Hi Patti,

Thanks.
Sorry, but I need to be absolutely clear about this because it was so awful.

This "re-release" did it specifically address, and fix, the crashing and
freezing KB891711 caused in Win 98SE ?

I've read the link you supplied, but it's hazy about this question.

If I can install it; should I uninstall the remnants of the old KB891711
please?

Thanks

You're welcome.

I understand your concern, and would say that the information provided in
the second bulleted item under Technical Update (i.e., "When you install the
security update 891711 original packages on a computer that is running
Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 98 Second Edition, or Windows 98, the
computer may stop responding. This issue has been corrected in the April 12,
2005, release) leads me to believe that the re-release specifically
addressed and fixed the crashing and freezing that the original update
caused in WIN98SE. All I can say about that re-release, from personal
experience, is that I have recently installed it on 3 WIN98SE computers on
which I performed a reformat/reinstall at the owner's request (due to issues
not involving that update) and have no ill effects to report.

Although I don't think that it's necessary to remove the old KB891711 prior
to installing the re-release, I think that, if I were working on a machine
that currently had the old update installed, I would uninstall it prior to
downloading and installing the re-release.
