On a new install of XP Pro Windows update is trying to install an update for
Virtual Machine.

On trying the message comes up "This setup will only upgrade over an
existing version of the Microsoft VM.

What do to stop this repeating on booting up?

Should VM installed when Windows installed?

Do I need VM?

Lindsay

Terry,

Looks like I need a user name and password for this.

Do I really need to install this?

If not how do I get rid of the update in Xp auto update?

Lindsay

You need vm to run java applets you have two choices sun microsytems or
microsofts vm. About two years ago microsoft was taken to court by sun
microsystem, and sun micro won the law suit, so microsoft discontinued using
vm however the web site i posted will allow you to download microsofts vm (
personally much better than sun microsystems on my computer) As I said
earlier to be able to play lets say yahoo games you need java.

Open Internet explorer go to tools then internet options then go to advance
tab, scroll down, If you do not see sun microsystems java or microsofts vm
java jit compiler you certainly need to download and then after go to wndows
up dates qand download the update for vm.
Hope I have been able to help.

Terry,

Thanks for you advice.

The download link on the page you directed me to requires a password to use.
Looked elsewhere but found no other link for Microsoft vm.

In frustration I installed from sun.
However the downloaded update won't apply and is therefore stuck on the
taskbar where it keeps prompting me to install it.

Where to from here?

Lindsay

To Get Microsoft Java Virtual Machine if you have XP and are without it, You
need to install 2 things and ENABLE the 'Microsoft VM' in your 'Internet
Options'/'Advanced'. To get the 2 needed Downloads, get the MS VM 3805 first
(this gives you 'license' to update then to 3810), then the MS VM 3810.
Install 3805 first, reboot, then the 3810, then reboot...Go then to
'Internet Options'/'Advanced' and scroll to the 'Microsoft VM'. I check mark
all 3 items (belt AND suspenders) and reboot again.
The link for MS VM "Version 3805" (a MUST first if you've got XP):
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive/msjavx86.exe
The link for MS VM "Version 3810" (install 2nd after a reboot):
http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3-19990518/cabpool/MSJavWU_8073687b82d41db93f4c2a04af2b34d.exe
That's it...takes about 15 minutes each for each download on 56K modem, burn
to CD if you can, in case the future is 'minus' any such sites as
these. They're disappearing. Download 'em into a 'New Folder' on
Desktop.Install the 3805, reboot, then the 3810, and reboot then the
Internet Options/Advanced and reboot. Done..

Thanks JoAnne for your assistance. This worked for me.
The download your link for "Version 3805" was the only among many that
actually worked.
All the others I tried proved only to be updates? At least that's what the
failed installation of the others told me.
I was then able to apply the update that Windows Update had downloaded but
could not apply.
Double checked on the Windows Update site to be sure then enabled settings
in IE 6.
