I have been trying to update my Windows, Internet Explorer, and Office but
when I click on Windows Update in the Start Menu it goes to an error page in
Internet Explorer like there is no internet connection. I have tried going
through Microsoft.com but even if I click on one of these links (windows
update or even office updates) it goes to the same error page. It is acting
like there is now Installer/download program installed but I am not sure how
to go about fixing it. Just a little more information: It is Windows 2000
SP4 with Internet Explorer 6.0. When you look at the task manager,
explorer.exe is using 40-50% of the cpu until I end the process. When I run
new process - explorer.exe - then it goes down to 0-1% like it should be. I
don't know if that has anything to do with the updates but if I could get
help with both problems, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Hi;

One guess would be that you have malware/adware on that system. Suggest
you do a quick scan here (http://aumha.org/a/noads.htm ) and then
download and install Adaware from here (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ ,
get the Free version first). Once installed, be sure to go online to
get the latest data updates, then do a full scan on your system.
Obviously, update your Anti-Virus software and do a scan with that as
well.

Second guess would be that there is/was an issue when you installed SP4.
If the adware/malware scans don't resolve the issues, suggest you
re-install SP4. Be sure you have a good and complete SP4 package --
download a new one if there is any doubt.

As for the installer and download manager issues, you can manually
install the new 3.1 Installer from here
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893803), you can check the File
Transfer Manager installation from here
(http://transfers.one.microsoft.com/ftm/default.aspx) and you should
also download/install the latest BITS 2.0 software from here
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3ee866a0-3a09-4fdf-8bdb-c906850ab9f2&displaylang=en).

Last, check your Hosts file and your internet configuration settings.
Especially look to see that your DNS server is correctly identified and
that the Hosts file isn't corrupted. Especially look for any
redirection IP addresses introduced by malware or your AV software.
