Error Messages in Windows Update

I have had to reinstall Windows ME on my other computer. I have been trying
to run Windows Update, for instance, to update I.E. to version 6. However, I
get into an enless loop of error messages in the process.

One error message says, "A previous installation has pending work requiring
a reboot. You need to restart your computer to complete that installation
before running Internet Explorer Setup. Setup will now close." So, I reboot
and try again, but then I get this message:
"RESUME WINDOWS UPDATE: INTERNET EXPLORER AND INTERNET TOOLS
Setup has detected that a previous installation was not completed. Do you
want to recover and continue Setup?
__ Yes, resume Setup
__ No, run Setup from the beginning. Select this option if Setup has failed
more than once."

I have tried both "Yes" and "No". However, when choosing "No", for instance,
the "Windows Update Progress" gets to 76% and then I get this message:
"Setup was unable to install all the components. Please close all
applications and trying runing Setup again." I have tried closing ZoneAlarm,
the only application running, and running Setup again, but that does not
work, either.

No matter how I try to do Windows Update, I always end up getting these
three error messages. I will appreciate advice as to how I can accomplish
Windows update. Perhaps I have to delete certain files and start over again,
but if so, which files?

Robert,

Was IE 6 installed on the system and was not UNinstalled prior to the
reinstallation of Win ME ?
Uninstalling and Reinstalling IE in Win ME
http://winnoel.users.btopenworld.com/ReInIE.htm

If this is not the case and you did uninstall IE 6 or had never upgraded
to it, try this : Show hidden files, folders, and system files
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html
Create a new folder in My Documents or on the Desktop and name it IEBak.
Navigate to Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information
Move all of the files from there to the newly created folder, IEBak.
Now try running Setup.exe for IE6 from either Safe Mode or, temporarily
disable the installed antivirus program.
If IE installs successfully then delete the IEBak folder.
If it doesn't, move all of the files back to Program Files\Internet
Explorer\Uninstall Information. Delete the empty IEBak folder.

If you chose to temp disable the installed antivirus program remember to
reenable it afterwards.
