Error 0x80072EEF on Win XP SP1 and Win 2003 SP1

I am having problems running Windows Update on Windows XP SP1 and on Windows
2003 SP1 where as soon as I click Express or Custom a proxy password box
appears saying 'Enter the credentials for proxy authentication'. My company
does have a proxy server, but the message from that (Microsoft ISA server)
says 'Connecting to' and its IP address. All worked fine on Windows XP and
Windows 2003 until SP1 was installed on both.

Also, on the Windows XP PC, the WindowsUpdate.log file has a liberal
scattering of these two lines since SP1 has been installed:
2005-05-31 09:14:17 4020 fb8 COMAPI WARNING: Operation failed due to earlier
error, hr=8024401B
2005-05-31 09:14:17 4020 fb8 COMAPI FATAL: Unable to complete asynchronous
search. (hr=8024401B)

Cheers for any help

Graham

I don't think you've given the full error code? This is just a guess.

When searching for available updates on the Windows Update site, you see the
0x80072EE7 error – Win2000, WinXP & Win Server 2003
This error may occur when the client PC tries to resolve a URL for the Windows Update
site and is unable to find the correct IP address.

You may receive an error message when you search for available updates on the Windows
Update Web site
0x80072EE7 error code

If I cancel the proxy logon box I get 0x8024401B, if I type something in I
get0x80072EEF. I don't get the 0x80072EE7 error. The proxy logon box is not
from my companies ISA proxy server, so I don't have a username and password
for it. Is it a microsoft proxy server?

I'm just guessing here, but perhaps this might help you in tracking down the
problem.

I searched for 0x80072EEF, and apparently it translates to an Internet login
failure. This happens when a proxy server blocks access to a general site
without a password to get out, or when BITS attempts to automatically
download the updates while you are not connected to the Internet.

Error 0x8024401B is:
SUS_E_PT_HTTP_STATUS_PROXY_AUTH_REQ
Http status 407 - proxy authentication required

From a previous post by Lucy [MSFT] about this error:

<quote>
David,

This is a Proxy Authentication error. Does your proxy require
authentication? What proxy server are you running? Configure the proxy to
allow updates.
