Well it worked for me, and millions of others without problem

While I am sure that there are other people who don't want to download SP2
(at one point I was among the skeptics) it's really in your best interests
to install it. If you absolutely will not install it then you will not get
any additional Windows updates in the not-to-distant future.

What to Know Before You Download and Install Windows XP Service Pack 2:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx

Get the XP SP2 CD for free:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

Learn About Windows XP Service Pack 2:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/preinstall.mspx

How to install Windows XP Service Pack 2 after downloading:

Now if you insist that you will not install it press the WinKey + Pause
break (or open System applet from the control panel) and disable automatic
updates.

Keli;
First turn off Automatic Updates:
Right click My Computer, click Properties
Click Automatic Update tab.
Place check by "Turn off Automatic Updates"
Click OK and follow prompts.
Follow step 5 on this link to delete what has already downloaded:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spack.htm
You will need to manually go to Windows update regularly to get the other
Critical Updates since Automatic Update is turned off.

Most of the problems related to SP-2 are caused by pre-existing problems,
most with success are quiet thus complaints outnumber success in noise only.
All problems, known and unknown, should be resolved before installing
anything especially a Service Pack.
A well maintained computer is less likely to have problems:

Aaaaak!!! Please don't tell people to turn off AU simply to decline one
individual package. Just uncheck the box!

1. Click the AU pop up telling you that you have updates.
2. Click the "Custom" option to see individual updates.
3. Uncheck the green check mark next to SP2, then click the CLOSE button
(not the red X). This will not install it for this session.
4. You will get a second dialog asking if you want to never see this update
again. Check the box, and click OK.
That's it. Gone.

The disk space will automatically free up over the next couple of day as AU
senses that it doesn't need the data. You don't need to manually delete it.

Now, you will stay secure with automatic updates until September 2006, when
SP1 stops being supported.

However, SP2 should work fine - it might be worth installing again after
checking your system. You can always uninstall it if there are problems.
