Hi...a couple weeks ago I had ask for some help with a XP problem and Galen
was so nice in helping me out. The problem was for my boss, who couldn't get
into Windows XP. The problem was as follows:

When I boot up, I get a message that windows wasn't
able to open properly, reason unknown, then it give me options...open safe
mode, open safe mode networking..I think that's it, and a couple others. If
I try to open it normally or open it to the last successful open, it shuts
off, then reboots to the same problem. If I try safe mode, it give me the
message that the ntoskrnl.exe is missing, but I still can't get in to fix it
and wondering what I need to get around that.

Galen's instructions to fix the problem were as follows:

Reboot the computer, as the computer is starting you should see a message to
press any key to boot from the CD. When you see this message press any key.

In the Microsoft Windows XP setup menu press the R key to enter the recovery
console.

Select the operating system you wish to fix, and then enter the
administrator password.

Type expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32

You will then be prompted if you wish to overwrite the file type Y and press
enter to overwrite the file.

Type exit to reboot the computer.

The problem is that my boss gets to where he types in
expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32

then, if I'm not misunderstanding him, he gets:

c:\window/
Which windows installations would you like to log onto to:

He only has one option and uses it, but then he gets:

C:\Windows> and a space for him to type in something and that's where he's
lost. What does he type in there?

Cheryl,

Hello and welcome back. I have dug this answer up for you and have found a
decent site that I'm going to direct you to instead.

CH000646: NTOSKRNL.EXE is missing or corrupt.:
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000646.htm

Going there will give you a number of different options and fixes. (It might
be possible just to do the bootcfg /rebuild command for instance so pay
careful attention also to the links on that page.)

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000648.htm

That's one link from the page that has that information on it.

At the prompt he'd have typed the switch "expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_
c:\windows\system32" without the quotes of course.

Now if the CD drive is not D: then that drive letter would be changed in the
switch to the new letter - say F: or G: or what have you.

I hope that's enough to get you going in the right direction.
