I have a Compaq Intel Pentium 111 running Microsoft Windows ME. I do not know
what is wrong with my computer as just recently after it is turned on it goes
through the motions and will freeze before everything has started up. There
is nothing you can do other then turning it off at the power point and
restarting the computer. It then has to go through the process of the
computer not being turned off correctly and scanning the drive for any
errors. I you are lucky after several attempts it will work correctly. can
anyone advise me what the problem may be before I pay someone to fix the
problem.

Can you get the system to boot correctly to Safe Mode???
If so, the chances are that you have a driver problem - post back for
instructions.
If not, then you probably have a slightly corrupt registry - try this
Boot to DOS using an ME (and ONLY an ME!) floppy boot disk (if you don't
have one, then either create one from the Add/Remove Programs|Startup Disk
wizard, or download a WinME OEM boot diskmaker from www.bootdisk.com, run it
to create the disk, and use that).
Choose either Boot with CD Support or Boot without CD Support - NOT
'Minimal'.
at the a:\> prompt, type the following
SCANREG /FIX
remove the floppy as the machine reboots, and see if that helps.
If not, then post back with details of what happened.
