XP, SP2, Extraction Failed
When trying to update Windows Home Ed using the SP2 disc I get the error
message "Extraction Failed". After a delay, it then says "Incorrect
Function".
Windows Update site says that the PC is ready for SP2.
Can anyone help?

Is your anti-virus software turned off at that time? Is the CD in decent
shape? Did you get the CD from Microsoft or from another source?
Get the CD free via postal mail:

Hi Galen,
Thanks for the reply.
Yes my anti-virus software is turned off and my CD is a copy of the original
Microsoft SP2 disc but I may get an original in case that is the problem.
I have found that there is a possibility that the prob is caused by having
an old version of Roxio EasyCD Creator installed. I will go about removing
this in due course to see if that fixes it.

Daz,
If Roxio is not causing the extraction failure then look here for
further clues : Cannot install Service Pack 2

Thanks Mowgreen,
Having tried to copy the xpsp2.exe file to the hdd I found that the file
won't copy giving an error message "Invalid ms-dos function". I will
therefore also try the suggestion in your recommended link for dealing with
this eventuality.
