Hi,
ever since upgrading my WinXPsp1 box to WinXPsp2, I've had a similar problem.
But only for certain hotfixes from Windows Update. All others over the same
time frame (the last two months or so) have downloaded and installed fine.
The ones failing to download are:
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - May 2005 (KB890830)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP Service Pack
2 (KB890923)
Security Update for Windows Messenger (KB887472)
Critical Update for Windows XP (KB886185)
Critical Update for Office XP on Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB885884)
Any idea why just these ones are failing?
Thanks
Craig

Suggestion A: Put some MS sites in Trusted Sites list of IE browser.
Internet Explorer > main menu /Tools/Internet Options >
Security Tab/ click on green icon Trusted Sites/click Sites button.
Look very closely at line that says:
"Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone" to
*clear* the selection.
(e.g. You want that to be un-checked (un-ticked)).
In the "Add this Web site to the zone:" field, add these entries to
list of "Trusted Sites" --
type
http://*.download.windowsupdate.com (click Add)
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com (with HTTPS)
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
Click OK. Apply changes to IE browser.
Retry Windows Update.
Suggestion B: If still no joy, start on some research.
Look for file WindowsUpdate.log in your C:\Windows folder ( or it may be C:\WINNT on your system).
Use Notepad or Wordpad to open & view contents. Scan the entries for the date(s) at issue and look for lines with *Error* & its text.
Another suggestion is to be sure to trim back (exit) open applications/programs before you go to Windows Update.
You list 5 different updates. They may or may not have the same failure.

I had tried those.
In the end it looks like my corporate proxy was the issue. I set up a
direct internet connection (not via corporate proxy) and the updates worked
fine.
The caches items on the proxy must be bogus... I'll have to see if I can
flush them out...
Thanks
