I have been trying to instl sp2 since last aug. and I get failed to install
about 3/4 into installing then it starts the uninstall process. I have tried
everything listed in KB articles. I even tried the cd same problem.

Any error messages? Have you cleaned your machine of virus and spyware *befor* installing SP2?

Clear all temp files, run disk cleanup.
Run the XP upgrade advisor just to see if there are any
problems found with the hardware installed or software.
Update the BIOS.
Run a virus scan in safe mode.
Scan for any malware using Microsoft Anti-Spyware (beta1),
Ad-Aware SE Personal and SpyBot S&D (all three).
Then uninstall the anti-virus and the anti-spyware and then
try the SP2 CD.

If all goes well, reinstall the anti-virus and spyware
scanners software, run Windows Update to get the latest
updates.

Carefully follow the Service Pack Installation Checklist:

I had this same similar problem. After days of looking into this (and this
was painful) I did the following.

1. I reinstalled machine to it's original state using recovery disks. (save
all important files externally since you don't want to risk losing them {i
did not} and you will need to re-load any added software. Make sure you have
all the disks for printers, modems, firewalls, 3rd party software etc.)

2. I installed SP1 completely
3. I installed SP2

If you skip #2, you will just be screwed. I tried to avoid this and tried
to find "soft fixes" with worse results.

MIcrosoft support for SP2 installation was very good BUT YOU HAVE TO READ IT
COMPLETELY and not omit any steps.

There is no need to install SP-1.
So skipping step 2 is not only possible but recommended so a major pointless
installation is avoided.
Apparently your reinstallation process resolved the problem.
