Just checking back to see if anyone has a new idea. After installing the SP2
update last September, I have been totally unable to install the .NET
framework update. Microsoft technical support offered dozens of
(unsuccessful) fixups for over 2 months and then gave up. Can't even
uninstall the old versions. Attempted updates result only in error messages.

this may or may not be relevant to you but i had similar problems trying to
install the new visual studio beta. I tried all sorts but in the end out of
desperation i uninstalled IIS did the downdates, then the updates then
reinstalled IIS. If you've not got IIS installed then obviously this won't
affect you but i thought i'd mention it just in case
