No updates happening, I've run out of options.

Win XP SP2 IE SP1, machine belongs to an AD domain and gets (attempts to get)
updates through conventional Windows Updates.

The Auto Updates aren't happening.
Every half hour there are about one dozen essent entries in Application Log,
all regarding the WU database starting and stopping. (Not errors, just
informational.)
In the WindowsUpdate log, I keep getting the following errors:
Unable to connect to the service (hr=80004002)
Unable to establish connection to the service. (hr=80004002)
Unable to initiate asynchronous search, hr=80004002

If I use IE Tools, Windows Update I get to the site, get the option for
Custom or Express, but once I choose either one I get "Windows Update has
encountered an error and cannot display the requested page." with Error
number: 0x800A01AE in the upper right corner of the browser.

I have reinstalled IE6 SP1, reinstalled Sun Java, registered countless
..dlls, renamed the Catroot2 folder - all coming from MS Knowledgebase
articles.

Does anyone have any other ideas or seen this same behavior and been able
to fix it?
The machine is amazingly clean - There seems to be no spyware or other junky
apps and it actually hasn't gotten a lot of use. There are also no 3rd party
security apps such as a personal firewall and we don't use a proxy server.
The problem has existed before and after SP2 installation.

Thanks.

Hi Charlie,

Do you happen to have a 3rd party app called Steganos Internet Anonym
installed? If so, uninstall it (simply de-activating it does not seem to
solve the problem), restart and then try Windows Update.

I doubt if this app is installed since there isn't much junk installed on the
machine.
Is it something that would show up in Add & Remove Programs?

I would imagine that it would show up in Add/Remove Programs, but I don't
know for certain as I have never installed it.
